Monday 25th September saw the start of my second year at Southampton Solent University after a ridiculously long summer break. The last day was 9th May, when my final assessment was handed in, so I was chomping at the bit to get back.
My first week back has been great. It was so nice to see my course colleagues again after so long. It was like we hadn’t even been parted and all just carried on where we left off so many months ago.
Solent University participates in the Erasmus Programme so we get exchange students every semester. This year we have more Erasmus students than last year, which is great. It’s so wonderful to meet people from different cultures and learn the differences and similarities between us. Hopefully new friends from other countries can also lead to cheap holidays!
This semester we have three units and each has two assessments, which is the same as last year. It seems, however, that these ones involve much more work! I guess the course is meant to get harder as the years go on but I have to admit to feeling a little overwhelmed!
The greatest thing about this semester is that there is only one essay. Last year my essays were graded lower than all my other work, much to my surprise, so I’m thinking less essays means a higher chance of a great grade.
We have an essay and a group presentation for Business and Ethics of Fashion. There’s a feature with a multimedia element and a group media kit for Magazine Production for Digital and Print. Finally we have a moving image piece and a digital portfolio for Fashion Film: Production, Intermediation and Consumption.
This will be the first time that we have produced joint assessments and I am excited by it. I am in the same team for both the units in which we are doing a group assessment. We’re quite a mixed bunch as there’s me, the 40 year old Brit; Holly, who is also British; Giorgia, an Italian; Zoe, from Belgium and Paula, who is Spanish. I think that it is working with them that is making me look forward to these assessments more than usual.
Another assessment I am excited about is the moving image piece. I know what I want to produce but I am not sure if I am going to be able to make it so. I fear my idea may be bigger than I can manage. I am not going to describe it now, in case I fail, but I hope I can achieve what I want. I only have until 15th December to do it though. Watch this space.
I am hoping that I will be a bit more regular with the blogging over this term. I want to document my progress on each unit reasonable regularly but I also want to produce more fashion/clothing content, as that is, ultimately, what I want to do.
Hopefully you’ll come with me on this journey too.
